Cooling products are made to let us freshen up. They are savers in the heat and replace a cold shower that we can’t always treat ourselves to. How do cooling products work (including after-sun and problematic skin-care cosmetics)?
What do the cooling products actually do?
The cooling effect they have is possible thanks to the components such as menthol, peppermint oil, eucalyptus, aloe vera, green tea, algae extract, some citruses (lemon, lime, grapefruit), watermelon or melon. The products include either synthetic or natural substances. These ingredients stimulate the cold receptors just like the cold weather does. The receptors signalize it to the brain which results in cooling effect, plus you feel a refreshing aroma of eucalyptus, mint or lemon.
The substances used in such products don’t change our body temperature – they just give the impression of coldness. The body temp remains on the same level despite us feeling nice coolness and refreshment.
After-sun cooling products
Cooling substances are added to shower gels, body lotions, shampoos, face creams and masks, foot creams, slimming and anticellulite treatments as well as after-sun products.
The tanned and sun-tired skin needs some relief and this can be achieved thanks to cooling cosmetics, including cooling shower gels and body balms which are enriched with skin-soothing and smoothing ingredients such as panthenol and vitamin E. Some after-sun products extend the life of suntan e.g. gels with gold particles and some advanced active substances which improve the skin at the same time. Other cosmetics contain self-tanning agents which replace the natural tan. All the products additionally reduce cellulite and have a slimming and plumping effect.
There are also micellar waters which freshen up the skin and give a nice cooling effect. Fragranced body mists do the same because they are rich in cooling and moisturizing ingredients.
Cooling products for problematic skin
It turns out that some cooling products can help us remedy some skin problems like sallow and tired skin, puffy eyes and dark circles, spider veins, sweaty feet, strained wrists or neck, sore temples or chapped lips. You can get rid of these problems by using cold compresses, soothing eye creams, cooling gel pads or ice cubes.
